Would it be weird/disrespectful to refer to a male character who canonically uses he/they as she? Genuine question, I don't mean to be disrespectful.

I'll confess I've never understood the concept of kin/kinning ... Does it mean identifying with a character? Or being that character in real life? Is it something exclusive to systems? Every time I search, I find different results. Could someone explain it to me?
